What to wear … the essentials for beginners

It is not necessary to rush out and buy expensive riding clothes before you know whether your child is going to enjoy riding and want to do it regularly. There are alternatives which are adequate until a commitment has been made!

Hats

Before ever sitting on a pony everyone must wear a riding hat, with the chin strap fastened, which passes the current safety standards.

We have hats are available for hire. The first occasion is free but thereafter we charge per occasion.
We do recommend that if a client is serious about riding they do invest in their own hat which will be fitted to fit their head.

Shoes

It is not necessary to have riding boots, but you must have a shoe, or boot with a small heel and a smooth sole which will not get stuck in the stirrup.
We only use safety stirrups on our saddles but they will not prevent heelless footwear slipping through them, or the tongues on trainers getting stuck.

Trousers

While jodhpurs are very comfortable any close fitting trousers of a stretchy material are suitable for riding.
Loose fitting trousers, jeans, or trousers with seams may be uncomfortable and rub the legs.

Gloves

Whilst not essential well fitting gloves do prevent fingers from becoming sore, or getting cold.
They also help grip the reins.

Body Protectors

These are thick, padded waistcoats which help prevent bruising when a rider falls off. They are expensive to buy and some children find them hot and uncomfortable to wear as well as being restrictive.
They are not essential until the rider is jumping over cross country jumps, but many riders do feel happier wearing them at all times.

Wearing a body protector is a matter of personal choice.
